Online vs in-person personal training: which is right for you?
Neither option is better for everyone. The right choice depends on your experience, your body, your schedule and your budget, and it can change over time. Many people start in person to learn the basics, then move online once they are confident. This guide compares the two side by side and explains who each one suits. With ATHLI, you can also combine both in one package.

What a session looks like
An in-person session
Your coach comes to your home or your gym anywhere in Dubai, bringing any equipment the session needs. The coach can watch you from every angle, adjust your position by hand, spot you on heavier lifts and change the session on the spot if something does not feel right. Between sessions, you keep in touch through in-app messaging, and your programme, progress and nutrition sit in the ATHLI Move app.
A live online session
You join your coach on a video call from wherever you are. Your coach takes you through the session in real time, watches your form on camera, and gives cues and corrections as you move. The session is built around the space and equipment you have, whether that is a living room, a hotel gym or a full gym. Programme, messaging, progress tracking and nutrition work exactly as they do for in-person clients.
When in-person training is the better choice
- You are learning movements such as squats, deadlifts or overhead lifts for the first time.
- You are coming back from an injury or have pain that changes day to day.
- You do not have equipment at home. An Elite coach brings it.
- You find it hard to focus on a screen, or you train harder with someone in the room.
- You want a spotter for heavier lifts.
When online training is the better choice
- You travel for work or split time between countries.
- Your free hours change every week, and travel time to a session is hard to fit in.
- You live outside Dubai, where Elite is not available.
- You already know the main movements and mainly need a programme, feedback and accountability.
- You want 1-on-1 coaching at about two thirds of the in-person price with ATHLI Remote.
Or do both: in-person and online in one package
If you mostly train in person but travel now and then, you do not have to choose one or the other. ATHLI lets you combine in-person and online training in the same package: when you travel, you can convert some of your in-person sessions to live online sessions. That way you keep training while you are away, instead of pausing or losing sessions, and you can switch back to in-person when you return.
Is online personal training as effective?
There is no one best way to train. Everyone has different goals, schedules, motivations, levels of discipline, and preferences when it comes to coaching.
For someone who's constantly travelling or has an unpredictable schedule, remote coaching could actually be more effective than in-person training. They're able to train consistently instead of constantly cancelling or rescheduling sessions.
Some people feel uncomfortable having a coach physically watching them, while others need that face-to-face interaction and external accountability to show up. Some are perfectly capable of training independently and just need the right programme to follow.
Everyone needs or prefers a different level of support, and that can change over time, too. What works for someone starting out might not be what they need six months down the line.
Finding the most effective approach starts with being honest with yourself about your schedule, motivation, discipline, and the support you actually need. Not what you think you should be doing, but what you can realistically commit to. Because consistency plays a huge role in getting results, and the right approach is the one that helps you keep showing up.
How to set up for online training
If you choose online coaching, a few simple steps make every session better:
- Place your camera so your whole body is in view. Prop your phone or laptop at hip height, a few steps back, so your coach can see you from head to toe.
- Clear a space about the size of a yoga mat, plus room to step. Most sessions do not need more.
- Check your connection before the call. A stable connection keeps feedback in real time.
- Have your equipment ready. Tell your coach what you have, even if it is only a mat and a resistance band. Sessions are built around it.
- Use headphones or a speaker. It makes it easier to hear cues while you move.
A third option: a plan without live sessions
If you do not need a coach in every workout, a coach-built plan costs less than either. Blueprint (from AED 799 per 4 weeks) includes one live session every 4 weeks. Flex (from AED 499 per 4 weeks) is fully self-guided with coach check-ins. You can compare all ATHLI plans and prices in one place.
Training with a partner or small group
Both Elite and Remote can be booked as Buddy (2 people) or Group sessions, with the block price shared. Training with a partner lowers the cost per person and adds accountability, and it works just as well online: each person joins from their own space, or you train together in front of one camera.
How to decide in three questions
- Do you need hands-on correction right now? If you are a beginner with heavy lifts or managing an injury, start in person.
- Can you reliably be in one place in Dubai at the same time each week? If not, online is easier to stick with. You can also combine in-person and online sessions in one package.
- What is your budget per month? Online live coaching costs about two thirds of in-person, and a plan costs less again.
If you are still unsure, the free consultation is the place to talk it through.
